I have just shown you how to get dropbox connected on Mint, and here comes a surprise of a new free cloud storage with 10GB out of the box. And There is no such thing as too much backup space, so here it comes:
Go to Minus.com and download the Ubuntu desktop application (or Windows installer). After it downloads just install it. On Linux it might say it needs some dependencies, but it will just install it for you. So no worries. On windows follow the installer’s instructions.
It nicely integrates with Mint Menu:
I intentionally did not tell you to create an account before. You can log in with your twitter. Some people like to have as little accounts as possible not to have million of passwords to remember. But some prefer not to share there accounts with third parties. So you can choose what is your best option. If you like to have dedicated minus account, you are most welcome to use my invite link that will give both of us extra space. Never too much of that, right. And since we are on the invites. It is nice of Minus to give people whole 1GB of extra space (the invited and the invitee each get 1GB). And up to 50GB from the invites! That’s huge! I mean huge! I hope some cloud war will start and we can all profit from that. I am also curious what are Karma points going to be used for:
For every friend that joins Minus, we’ll give you both 1 GB of extra space (up to 50 GB) and 1 Karma point!
I like the philosophy. It made me super curious. But back to setting it up. From now on it is the same on Linux and Windows (gotta love it!). A log in window will appear. Choose your option (twitter/minus/create account) and log in:
After log in you get an icon in the notification area and a dashboard window:
Every time you run your mouse over the notification icon the pop-up balloon will come up. I would love to be able to click on it which would open file explorer, but it does not. You can drag any file, and while holding it run your mouse over the notification icon. The pop-up from Minus.com will appear and than you drop it there. It will automatically upload to the cloud and appear on your list.
If you drag and drop files like that Minus will create a new folder with this file. If you want to add files to existing folder, you have to drop them to the dashboard window on the folder you like.
All the files go to the cloud. they are not stored on your harddrive like in Dropbox. Some people may like it more (the small hard drives owners) some less (the file sharing between many computers types). But it is good there is choice for anyone.
To navigate in Minus.com easily one has to get used to clicking on a correct place. Sometimes we click and it will open a list of files in a folder and sometimes it will open browser with the list. Easy trick to know when is to pay attention to the cursor. Normal arrow open folder:
Link-clicking hand-like icon opens the Minus.com website on the first file.
You can also choose if files are private or public. They are automatically private, but you can easily share files by giving people your profile link. Which in case of a designated account is http://minus.com/your-username like mine: http://minus.com/blaite. I have put there few pictures. Go and have a look how great is the experience. It will automatically open the pictures and you can go to a next one with the arrows.
Or click on the Open Folder icon. It opens in linear mode, but you can switch to grid mode (with the icons in upper right corner):
It got a piece of my heart right away. Give it a try. It is FREE!
